A proposed 4-lane bridge, the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge, will soon connect Assam's
Dhubri with
Meghalaya's Phulbari, near the Bangladesh border. The bridge, expected to be completed by 2028-29,
will be India's second-longest bridge over water, spanning more than 19 km.Currently, the main mode
of transportation between
Dhubri and Phulbari is by ferry, which can take up to 2.5 hours. The new bridge is expected to
significantly boost trade and commerce in the region, leading to the
development of India's North-Eastern states. The construction and operations of the bridge will
also create new employment opportunities in the area.
The project, initially budgeted at INR 3600 Crore, has experienced unforeseen challenges
resulting in almost double the original investment. The completion date, originally set for
2028, has been pushed to 2029 to allow for careful engineering and expanded requirements that
prioritize safety and performance.
